The Fundulopanchax gardneri Akure is a very pretty fish with bright yellow edgings on the fins.
It is a typical mop spawner, depositing a very large number of eggs in a mop and
the gravel beneath. Eggs left in water will hatch in roughly 2 weeks. I mop dry
the eggs and wait 3-4 weeks before wetting. This way the fry are all the same
size and much easier to feed.

This picture is of my primary male breeder. After several batches of fry, I
got an entire batch with a different coloration pattern. Same male, same female,
same tank, same mops. But the fry are developing very consistent in their
coloration. The coloration is different though.
These two pictures are of a male on August 30. 2001

Notice there is no yellow on the edges. Also, the finnage is much larger at
this age than would be normal. The color sheen goes from a light green to a blue
green depending upon the light. Absolutely gorgeous fish.
While this may just be a one time oddity, I will keep these fish to spawn
within the batch to see if the coloration will breed true. If so, a very
colorful akure variation will be enjoyed by many.
These next two pictures are of the fish on 9/23/2001. The camera did not pick
it up very well, but there is just a hint of yellow on the top edge of the
dorsal fin. They are still developing into a nice fish. This fish is not the
same one as above. That male is set up for breeding, but these two below look
almost as good.

Below is the same two fish again on 10/11/2001. Notice how much of the yellow
is now in evidence. The angled picture shows the body color sheen is holding up.
No question though that the second red band is turning yellow, typical of the
Akure.
