Cryptoheros spilurus sp cutteri
OverView
I received 4 or 5 of these as fry in early May 2007. I was told a slightly alkaline pH and fairly hard water. They were from 'middle america' Not a lot to go on.I placed them in a 10 gallon tank that I had prepared for them. The tank water had Seachem Tangayikan Salts added, along with Seachem Equilibrium to bring the pH up to 7.6 and the TDS ranges from 400 - 450. A heater brings the temperature up to 78F. Filtration is from a sponge filter. Lights are on 12-13 hours a day..
Housing and Breeding

I would have liked to have a larger tank to put them in, but the 10 was the best I could do. The fish were fed large quantities of baby brine shrimp, frozen brine shrimp and chopped blackworms. With the diet the growth was explosive. A male appeared, hated one of the other fish and then there were 4. A couple of weeks later, there were 3. Sure hopes the big guy knows what he is doing.
By late July a female has set up residence in one of the caves, and the male spends a lot of time outside protecting it. Who knows what from, he has already killed off everyone else.

After a few days, the female brings out the newly hatched hordes and places them in little dug out areas in the sand. They get moved several times a day by the male and female. They are just great parents to these fry.

Below is pic of the fry moved to a depression.

Once they are free swimming I am feeding them large amounts of newly hatched brine shrimp.

By the middle of September the fry are the same size as the original fry I started out with. The complete turn around from fry to adult to same size fry has only taken 4-5 months. Except instead of having 5 fry I have close to 50. But the appetite is the same. Lots and lots of anything that will fit in the mouth is wanted from lights on to lights out. These are a great little cichlid with a great personality.

Foods
Adult fish are fed live blackworms, daphnia, some baby brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms. Mosquito larvae and daphnia are fed when available. Baby brine shrimp are added to the mix when I have a lot of shrimp.
I am slowly managing to catch these youngsters and move them to larger quarters to grow up some more. I am sure the parents want to breed again. All these youngsters have got to be a distraction.
